On September 15, the sun was setting over Evergreen Lake when one guest at the Taste of Evergreen took one of the last desserts off The Frame Shop's table. She told the Canyon Courier she had tried almost every restaurant in Evergreen and hadn't known this one existed. Her dessert was a butterscotch-style pudding topped with berries and pistachios. It won first place in the "sweet bites" category from the judges and from the popular vote. A couple at the same event said they found places that were new to them too, naming Murphy's Mountain Grill and Evoke 1923. "We thought we'd been almost everywhere, but clearly not," one of them said.
That reaction came up again and again in Evergreen in 2026, and the reason is easy to trace. For most of the year, the main way through downtown was a work zone.
A summer of cones on Highway 74
The Colorado Department of Transportation's $6.5 million resurfacing of Highway 74 runs from Evergreen Lake to Lair o' the Bear Park. CDOT lists the timeline as May 2026 to October 2026. The work covered downtown Evergreen itself. When it's done, the road will have wider shoulders, upgraded guardrails, ADA-compliant curbs and a much improved bridge over Bear Creek.
The project also turned up a surprise. During resurfacing, crews found an abandoned cistern under the roadway. CDOT's regional communications manager said it likely dates to the late 1800s or early 1900s and needed more engineering work. That and heavy rain caused some delays, but CDOT said the project stayed on track for its original fall 2026 completion.
In its most recent update, the Canyon Courier reported that CDOT expected most downtown work, including parking restrictions and traffic control, to wrap up within about a week. Guardrail replacement, punch-list items and site cleanup were scheduled to take several more weeks. That means daytime single-lane closures between Meadow Drive and Lair o' the Bear until the job is finished. Check current conditions before heading west of downtown on a weekday.
Some of the parking near downtown is new this year. Jefferson County reports that its JC-73 improvements from Highway 74 to Buffalo Park Road were finished in spring 2026. The project added a six-foot paved shoulder and more public parking near downtown Evergreen.
Who felt the slowdown
The roadwork hit hardest at the businesses that had the least time to build a following. Suz Cookie Jar Rescue moved from Marshdale to the downtown boardwalk in April, just before the cones went up. Co-owner Sue Mueller told the Courier:
"We don't have a lot to compare it to because we're new down here, but during construction, it was really, really slow. … But we're still here. If I'm not being challenged in this bakery business, I'm not living."
The bakery is run by Mueller and her daughter, Jacquie Cook. They bake cookies, breads and cakes, and their website also lists breakfast, lunch, and custom cakes and cookies. The shop opens at 7 a.m. Tuesday through Friday. That makes it the earliest stop on the list below and the easiest one to fit in before downtown traffic picks up.
The short list, with hours that matter in October
The places Taste guests called new to them sit in different parts of town. A few are downtown or by the lake, one shares a building with the brewery on Evergreen Parkway, and one is at the golf course. Here's what each serves and when it's open, based on each business's own posted information:
| Spot | Where | What it is | When it's open |
|---|---|---|---|
| Suz Cookie Jar Rescue | Downtown boardwalk | Bakery with breakfast, lunch and custom cakes | Tue–Thu 7 a.m.–3 p.m., Fri 7 a.m.–5 p.m., Sat–Sun 9 a.m.–4 p.m., closed Mon |
| The Frame Shop Lounge | Same building as Evergreen Brewery, 2962 Evergreen Pkwy | Rotating signature cocktails and seasonal shareable bites | Thu–Sat 5–11 p.m. |
| Evoke 1923 | 27376 Spruce Lane | Global cuisine on a rotating seasonal menu | Dinner Wed–Mon 5–9 p.m., happy hour Sun–Thu 4:30–6 p.m. |
| Murphy's Mountain Grill | 27906 Highway 74 | Scratch-made burgers, sandwiches, specialties and artisan sundaes | Opens 11 a.m. daily except Tuesday |
| Syd's on the Green | Evergreen Golf Course, 29614 Upper Bear Creek Road | Breakfast, lunch and dinner at the golf course | Seasonal and closed for winter |
The places on that list aren't all new businesses, and that helps explain the reactions at the Taste. Murphy's Mountain Grill says it was established in 2016 and is family-owned by Chef Rand Packer and Tiffani Packer. It has been in town for a decade and still surprised a couple who thought they'd tried almost everything. The Frame Shop Lounge, by contrast, opened this year in a small space in the same building as Evergreen Brewery, which shares in its ownership and management. Because it's open only three evenings a week, many people who drive past the building every day have never walked in.
Syd's on the Green is the one with a deadline
Most of the list will still be there in January. The golf course restaurant won't. Keys on the Green closed at the end of 2024, and the space stayed dark through 2025 even under a new operator. In 2026, Megan Gunter took over, renamed it Syd's on the Green, and held a grand opening May 1.
The City of Denver's Evergreen Golf Course page describes the restaurant as seasonal: open daily from May 1 until it closes in the fall, then closed for winter. The same page also lists a separate set of daily hours, 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. No closing date is posted. Call ahead before planning a weekend breakfast there in late October. After this first season under the new name, the next chance to eat there will be spring.
The rest of the late-fall calendar
The Evergreen Park & Recreation District and the Chamber have a few dates left before Thanksgiving. Each one is near at least one of the places above:
- Nightmare at 1520 Haunted House. EPRD lists the remaining nights as October 10, 15–17, 22–24 and 29–31. Directions send visitors to 1521 Bergen Parkway. That's a short drive from The Frame Shop Lounge, which is open Thursday through Saturday nights, the same nights as most haunted-house dates.
- Trick-or-Treat Trail. Friday, October 30, 4 to 8 p.m., at the Buchanan Park Ball Fields. Trick-or-treaters need tickets. The other activities on the ball fields are free, including a screening of E.T.
- Mountain of Thanks. The Evergreen Chamber's calendar lists this free festival of art, music, food and wellness for Saturday, November 14, 1 to 5 p.m., at Evergreen Design Center, 27945 Meadow Drive. The listing is on a Chamber page first posted in an earlier year, so check the event page before you go. Meadow Drive is also where the daytime single-lane closures on Highway 74 begin, so traffic toward Lair o' the Bear may affect how you get there.
The lake between paddleboats and skates
Right now Evergreen Lake is in its in-between season. Elk are the main draw, and ice skating hasn't started yet.
The fall rut is one of two times of year when encounters between people, dogs and elk at the lake increase and sometimes turn dangerous, according to Evergreen Audubon. The group runs a volunteer program called Wildlife Watch with Denver Mountain Parks and Wild Aware. Volunteers watch the lake for elk and encourage safe viewing. Evergreen Audubon says that in the past, 90% of conflicts with elk were started by human behavior. In practice, a coffee from the boardwalk and some distance from the herd are what keep an October walk around the lake uneventful.
Skating has no date yet. As of a September 28 update, EPRD said it would release information about the 2026–27 ice skating season once it has an opening day. It also notes that the rinks can close at any time for weather or ice conditions.
One trail change also affects weekend plans this season. Jefferson County says Meyer Ranch Park will be fully closed from October or November 2026 through spring 2027, and suggests Alderfer/Three Sisters and Elk Meadow as nearby alternatives. Elk Meadow is on the same side of town as The Lazy Butcher, a restaurant, butcher shop and Cowboy Lounge at 30790 Stagecoach Blvd. that opened in 2024. It's open 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. every day except Monday, which works for a post-hike lunch. The Lazy Butcher is also where Notka got its start. Notka is a non-alcoholic spirit company from Floyd Hill. Mixologist Rachel Lewin and some coworkers were having lunch there when someone joked about ordering an alcohol-free Bloody Mary made with "notka" instead of vodka, and they trademarked the name the next week. At this year's Taste, Notka's Butterfly Pea Lavender Lemondrops won people's choice in the sips category and second place from the judges.
Eighteen Chamber members served food and drinks at this year's Taste of Evergreen. For at least a few longtime residents, that evening by the lake was their first taste of places they hadn't known about.
We follow places like the boardwalk bakery and the golf course kitchen because knowing which corner of Evergreen is changing is part of knowing the town.
